March 22 (105-120)

I dont really understand why the amount of time Jem reads to Mrs. Dubose gradually increases. And why she cant really hear them because she is focused on the clock. I thought it was really sad when Scout got that letter from Dill saying he wasnt coming that summer. What does it mean when in her will, she said she was beholden the world to nothing and nobody? And when she died free?

  1. Great questions! Mrs Dubose is trying to break herself from her addiction. In doing so, everyday she sets the clock a little longer between her doses of drugs. So, say, she goes from taking her drugs every 10 minutes... and every day she pushes it back a little longer. She eventually only has to have her drugs every hour instead of 10 minutes... therefore breaking her addition. The children reading to her is really just serving as a distraction to make the time go quicker. When she died beholden to nothing, it means that she died with no debt to anyone, and she was not addicted to anything. She died free of addiction. Hope that helps!
